Bartter Scholars Program
The Bartter family established this program with the purpose of providing stipends for students to take part in clinical research projects. Each year, the entire UTHSCSA student body is notified of the Bartter Scholars Program. The application requires a brief (3-page) project proposal, a personal statement from the student, and a letter of support from a faculty mentor. The applications are independently read and ranked by a committee of GCRC Directors and Investigators. Five to seven applications are submitted each year and the top 1or 2 are selected based solely on proposal quality. If no applications are judged of sufficient quality or feasible, then the stipends are not awarded. Instead, they are held for the following year.

The Bartter Scholars from the Medical School are now in their residencies and fellowships. The three nursing scholars used the stipends to support their Ph.D. research. Drs. Ruzicka and Mosely successfully defended their dissertations in July 1998 and 2000, respectively. The Bartter Scholar program demonstrates the GCRC commitment to fostering research experiences across all UTHSCSA schools.
