General Information about the GCRC

![]()
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) has successfully managed a National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) funded General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) since March 1982. Named the Frederic C. Bartter GCRC, the Center is situated on the seventh floor of the South Texas Veterans Health Care System Audie L. Murphy Division (STVHCS-AMD) Hospital, one of two major teaching hospitals of UTHSCSA. This Veterans Administration (VA) hospital is contiguous with the second major UTHSCSA teaching hospital (University Hospital) and the Medical School. This twenty year partnership is a unique joint venture between the NIH and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), since the GCRC is managed under a sharing agreement between the UTHSCSA and STVHCS-AMD, i.e., the VA also provides resources to manage the Center. The Frederic C. Bartter GCRC was established in the VA so that we could pool our local resources and establish an economical clinical research program. The purpose of the original GCRC application was to provide mechanisms for performing clinical research involving both Veterans and non-Veterans from the South Texas area in a well run clinical research facility.
