- National network of 78 centers that provide optimal settings for medical
investigators to conduct safe, controlled, state-of-the-art, in-patient
and out-patient studies of both children and adults.
- GCRC resources include highly trained research and administrative
personnel, a core laboratory, a bioinformatics system, and a metabolic
kitchen.

- GCRCs also provide infrastructure and resources that support several career
development opportunities.

- Through a competitive award process, NCRR provides supplemental funding
to the General Clinical Research Centers (GCRCs) that it already
supports so the GCRCs can establish institutional programs that will
introduce medical students to potential careers in clinical research.

- GCRCs are the focal point of this award program because they provide the
necessary infrastructure and environment to expose medical students to
both didactic training and the clinical practice of patient-oriented
research.

- Medical student can take off up to one year to
- Perform mentored patient-oriented research on the GCRC
- Take course work related to patient-oriented research
- Learn laboratory skills that can be applied to patient-oriented
research

- GCRC grant will support 2 students for the 2005-2006 academic year
- Stipend - $20,000/year
- Research support - $5,000/year
