Mandatory Human Research Training
All investigators, research coordinators, and research assistants involved in human studies must complete the following courses:
The GCP training certificate must be printed and presented to the VA Research Office.
Human Research Subject Protection Training -
One of the following courses will satisfy this requirement:(1) UTHSCSA web-based Human Subject Protection Training
An open book test on the information contained in the text "Protecting Study Volunteers in Research" must be taken and passed.
This text is available for check out in the UTHSCSA library (while kept in the reserve collection, the book can be checked out for two weeks) and for purchase in the bookstore. Once he/she has read the book, the investigator should contact the Office of Educational Research and Development testing center at 7-2292 to make arrangements to take the exam on-line. The investigator will be issued a password by the testing office.
The exam is contained in the text of the book on page 225 and covers material from the first 89 pages. It is an open book exam and should require no longer than an hour to complete. Answering 90% of the questions correctly is required for successful completion.
The IRB office will provide the VA Research office with documentation of UTHSCSA web training taken.
(2) The NCI web-based course on Human Participant Protections
If the NCI course is taken, the certificate must be printed and provided to the VA Research Office.
Ethics Training - The CD for this training can be borrowed from the GCRC or from the VA R&D office.
